Ever dreamed of sharing your knowledge with the world while earning a steady income? Writing an ebook could be your ticket to achieving both. With dedication and the right approach, it’s possible to write an ebook in just one day and start making money by the end of the week.
Here’s how you can transform your expertise into a profitable ebook, even if you’ve never written one before.
Why Write an Ebook?
Ebooks offer a flexible, digital format that appeals to modern readers. They provide aspiring authors, online entrepreneurs, mom entrepreneurs, and content creators with an opportunity to share expertise, solve problems, and generate income.
With my first ebook, I made about $1,500 in just a weekend, and I wrote it in a single day. Now, I’m here to guide you through the process of writing, formatting, and selling your own ebook.
Step 1: Choose the Right Topic
The foundation of a successful ebook lies in selecting the right topic. I know that navigating through all the ideas that you have on your brand, and what would make a good eBook guide can be difficult, but this is the process that worked for me:
- Identify Your Expertise: Reflect on what you know best. What do people constantly ask for your advice on? Whether it’s personal finance, relationship tips, or wellness, choose a topic you’re knowledgeable and passionate about.
- Solve a Problem: Your ebook should address a specific problem or question. Focus on one clear issue to keep your content concise and valuable.
- Market Research: Use tools like Google, YouTube, and Answer the Public to understand popular topics and questions in your niche. Then research what digital products your competitors have launched, or what books you can find in bookstores (or even on Amazon) on similar topics. This research ensures your ebook will meet a genuine need.
In order for your ebook to do good, it needs to solve a clear problem. We are not trying to throw everything we know into one massive extensive guide, even if you do have extensive knowledge on a topic.
Focus on one clear question, something that you see people ask over and over again, and write an eBook specifically addressing and answering that.
Step 2: Engage with Your Audience
Understanding your audience’s needs is crucial. Here’s how to engage:
- Ask the Audience: If you have an audience, ask them what they want to learn. Use social media polls with closed-ended questions to gauge interest.
- Go Live: Host live sessions around your topic. These interactions provide invaluable insights and allow you to gather real-time feedback.
- Look at reviews and comments. Find other eBooks and even pieces of content online related to your eBook topics. And go through the reviews or comments to find out what people found helpful, what they had additional questions on, and what they still want to know.
If you have an audience already, it’s so vital to get them involved, asked for their opinion and make them part of your research process for your book. They are real people, treat them as such!
But if you’re new and yet to build an online presence, just borrow other people’s audiences.
Odds are that if someone is commenting asking for finance tips for single moms under X’s video, they are genuinely interested in that topic.

Step 3: Create a Book Outline
Once you’ve chosen your topic and engaged with your audience, it’s time to outline your content. Outlining helps you organize your thoughts and ensure a logical flow of ideas. Here’s what to include:
- Introduction: Set the tone for your ebook and introduce the problem or question you’ll be addressing.
- Background Information: Share any relevant information or personal experiences related to the topic.
- Organize Key Points: List all the main topics and subtopics you want to cover.
- Main Content: This is where you offer solutions, tips, and strategies to solve the problem or answer the question. Use headings and subheadings to break up long chunks of text and make it easier for readers, as well as chapters and sub-chapters where necessary.
- Focus on Value: Make sure each section provides actionable insights or answers a common question.
Step 4: Write Your Ebook
Time to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Once you have all your research, ideas and chapters outlined, it’s time to start writing them.
Here’s how to get started:
- Voice to Text: Use voice-to-text tools like those on Mac products or apps like Otter to quickly dictate your content. This method helps you capture your ideas naturally and efficiently.
- Edit and Refine: After dictating, edit for clarity and flow. Make any necessary spelling or grammatical corrections.
When it comes to an ebook, you don’t want it to be way too long and have people who never can finish it and never accomplish what they are trying to accomplish. You want to make it a shorter read, in my opinion.
All the books that I’ve ever bought that I actually found useful weren’t these 100+ pages documents. And although there is no right size fits all for eBook lengths, you just need to keep this in mind: an ebook needs to be as long as it needs to be to answer the question (or solve the problem), and as short as it can be to get your point across.
Instead of trying to hit a word or page count with it, focus on hitting all the points in your outline.
I find that once your outline is done and clear enough to follow, you can easily write your eBook in a day or a weekend from there!
If you hate writing, get your phone out and use a speech to text converter while you just chat about each point and sub-point in your outline. Pretend you’re giving a presentation about it, or telling a best friend who is struggling with that problem what worked for you!
Step 5: Format Your Ebook
Once you have your first draft, and all the words out, it’s time to format them! Break everything in the right paragraphs and sentences, correct your spelling, get rid of filler words or repetitive sentences and just look over everything once.
Presentation matters. Here’s how to make your ebook visually appealing:
- Use Canva: Canva offers free templates perfect for ebooks. Simply transfer your text into a template, add visuals, and design a cover page.
- Keep It Simple: If you prefer, you can keep your document basic, focusing on clear fonts and spacing. Just ensure you have a professional-looking cover.
- Buy Ebook Design Templates. If you want to save time and quickly paste in your content on pre-designed pages and eBook covers, that’s also an option. Check out my two pre-designed eBook templates above!
Make your eBook design work around your book contents, and use it to accentuate the value and tips you have included, not to distract from it.
If you’re new to Canva, I promise it’s so easy to use! And you can follow one of my many YouTube tutorials on how I import my eBooks and design them on there:
Step 6: Distribute Your Ebook
Now that your ebook is ready, it’s time to get it to your audience:
- Use SendOwl: Upload your ebook to a platform like SendOwl, which handles digital distribution. Set your price, and they’ll take care of payment processing and delivery.
- Alternative ways to sell eBooks include creating a Shopify store, or using a platform like Podia.
- Create a sales page for your eBook: Design a landing page that converts into sales (or buy a pre-made eBook sales page) to display the contents of your eBook, book reviews from pleased readers, bonuses and frequently asked questions about your book topic.
- Create a Sales Funnel: To drive sales, you need a strategy. Share links via your blog, social media, or email list to guide potential buyers to your ebook.
Once you’ve created your eBook, start telling people about it, but make sure you have a process in place first to receive sales, complete transactions and deliver the final eBook PDFs.
