In today’s fast-paced digital world, the landscape of work has dramatically changed. Remember when grocery shopping meant an in-person trip to the store? Now, thanks to apps, groceries magically appear at your doorstep. The way we do business has also transformed, requiring new digital skills to stay competitive and secure financial stability for our families.
If you’re a work-from-home mom or a mompreneur looking to enhance your skill set and increase your income, this post is for you. Here are some high-paying digital skills to learn to make more money, build a sustainable online career and empower you to create financial abundance.
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence has been the hottest topic on the internet over the last year and is becoming a vital job skill in today’s rapidly changing job market. AI continues to be integrated across industries, from healthcare to finance and having AI knowledge can increase your employability and career prospects.
Understanding AI allows you to develop, implement, and manage systems, while increasing your efficiency and decision-making within organizations.
As businesses seek to automate routine tasks, professionals with AI skills can focus on higher-level roles, giving them a competitive edge. AI literacy is not just an asset but a necessity for staying relevant and advancing in your career.
2. Digital Marketing
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first—digital marketing. If your business isn’t marketing digitally in 2024, you’re leaving money on the table. Digital media opens up unmatched opportunities without the need for traditional marketing methods like door-to-door sales or handing out flyers.
By mastering digital marketing, you can build a multimillion-dollar company. This skill allows you to create your own online brand or offer your services to employers digital marketing experts. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are full of resources and teachers who can help you master these skillss.
When I started my online brand after leaving corporate America, I learned to market myself on YouTube and Instagram effectively. This skill enabled me to attract supporters and brand partnerships, significantly contributing to my success.
Digital marketing is a skill that any business can use right now, and there’s no shortage of job opportunities for multi-platform marketing managers, or single-platform specialists like a Pinterest Virtual Assistant, Instagram account manager, TikTok content editor and so on!
My advice is to find proficient teachers you can learn from and become an expert on a select number of platforms. Then market yourself as a marketing manager and sell packages related to those services, or get hired by a company that has a role for that position.
3. Copywriting
Words are powerful. They convince people to like us, make buying decisions, and convert visitors into customers. That’s why copywriting is a high-paying skill. Companies and individuals constantly seek experts who can craft compelling copy for websites, captions, and marketing materials.
You don’t need formal education to excel at copywriting. Many resources are available to help you teach yourself the art of persuasive writing. Learning how to write captivating captions, engaging web copy, and effective sales pitches can set you apart in the digital landscape.
I had to learn copywriting early on to connect with my audience on live streams and Instagram. This skill has paid off immensely and continues to be a valuable asset.
We need words, and other brands and business owners do too! That’s why they are looking for people to craft the words they need to market their products or services.
If you love writing, and have a knack for it, you can excel at it, as this is one of those skills that can be self-taught and improved through experience.
4. Video Production
Video content is king, and mastering video production is a lucrative skill. Both long-form and short-form videos are essential for social media marketing. Learning how to produce and edit videos can make you millions.
When I started my YouTube channel, I learned to create high-quality videos, present myself on camera, and edit engaging content. These skills not only increased my income but also allowed me to promote myself even when I wasn’t online.
Video production is in high demand, not just for small business owners or content creators but also for large brands. Professionals like Peter McKinnon and YC Imaging have built successful careers by creating videos for big businesses and record labels. By mastering video production, you can expand your client base and secure high-paying projects.
Both long-form video content (like Youtube videos, online masterclasses etc) and short-form video content (Instagram reels, TikTok videos etc) are highly sought after, and as long as there are platforms that facilitate a global audience for video content, there will always be job opportunities for those editing and formatting those videos!
5. Cyber Security
Cybersecurity is a highly valuable job skill because it focuses on one of the most critical challenges of the digital age: protecting data from cyber threats. As more businesses rely on digital infrastructure, the demand for professionals who can secure these assets has skyrocketed.
With the constant change of technology and cyber threats, cybersecurity offers a wide range of career opportunities with strong job security, competitive salaries, and the chance to work in a wide range of industries. This makes cybersecurity not only a good skill to learn but also a strategic investment in a long-term, stable career.
6. Graphic Design
If you can visualize concepts and bring them to life using graphic design software, this skill is invaluable. Graphic design is crucial for online business promotion, social media marketing, and video production.
From YouTube thumbnails to social media graphics, graphic design plays a significant role in maintaining audience attention. Mastering this skill can open doors to various opportunities, whether you’re creating visuals for your brand or offering design services to others.
Platforms like Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud have resources and tutorials to help you learn graphic design from scratch and can be used to help you create amazing visuals.
I taught myself how to create thumbnails by going inside Canva and either taking one of the templates that they already had there, customizing it to what I wanted or seeing examples of other thumbnails that were working for others and replicating it.
My graphic design skills have increased my ability to make money because it made more people click on my videos, watch them and even buy some of my products (whose graphics I also designed).
And that’s a skill that I taught myself that has increased my income, even if I don’t consider myself to be an expert at it.
7. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a cornerstone skill for anyone looking to thrive in the online space. Picture this: millions of websites jostling for attention, each vying to be at the top of search engine results. By mastering SEO, you hold the key to making your content more visible and driving organic traffic to your website. This skill involves understanding how search engines like Google rank content and tailoring your pages to meet those criteria.
Whether you’re a mompreneur with your own business or offering SEO services to clients, this expertise can significantly boost your income potential. Effective SEO strategies can lead to higher visibility, more website traffic, and ultimately, increased sales or conversions. Imagine the joy of seeing your website climb the ranks and knowing that your efforts are paying off in real, measurable ways.
Thankfully, you don’t have to start from scratch. There are fantastic resources available, like Moz, SEMrush, and Ahrefs, which offer comprehensive courses and tutorials. These platforms guide you through keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, and analytics, ensuring you have a well-rounded understanding. Learning SEO might take time, but the rewards—both financial and personal—are well worth the effort.
Because I started out as a blogger, I had to learn about SEO to rank my posts in Google, and that skill transferred over to using keywords and focusing on search based content for my Youtube videos as well.
This helped my videos rank higher, and it played a big part in my growing both of my platforms.
If you can nail SEO, you can create an opportunity for yourself to make so much more money. So many businesses are looking for people who know SEO because they want to get passive traffic from search engines (like Google, Bing, and the search engines on specific platforms like Youtube).
SEO is the key to getting views and eyes on existing content or content that’s been created and posted a few months and years ago. And that’s because evergreen long-term passive content will continue to bring in leads to the business who master this skill.
